Alzeth bust
I’ll be using this to conduct lighting tests on, stupidly didn’t construct any UV’s beforehand though, so I’ll have to take a base mesh into maya, unwrap it, then project the details back onto it in zbrush before I continue with making it fit for a lighting setup. I’ll be using the StarCraft II screenshots for visual reference.

Final Fantasy vs XIII

This game seriously cannot come out soon enough. Shame I’ll have to buy a PS3 to play it. It’s of particular interest to me since it does exactly what I want to do with mine; combines fantasy elements such as magic in a technologically advanced ‘modern’ setting. It also has a sense of grandeur because of the archaic styling of the buildings, even though they’re probably newer than the surrounding city.

World Building

I’ve been trying to flesh out the world some more, and that involves making a unified theme for the new architecture. I wanted to mix modern elements with the grand old buildings, so started off by looking at gothic architecture and its chief characteristics. The tower has flying butresses, I think I can work a trefoil into a new style of hard drive, in the nightshot you can see the old buildings with the new city sprawling atop it. There are also things like floating streetlights, powered by glowing crystals which illuminate at night.

Play Starcraft II for a few hours, also nab a load of uni work reference screenshots.

Best idea evar. “Art imitates life” and all that. These shots are set out in precisely the same style I’d considered for my “Rk” Graphic Adventure. Yes, it has a name now. I was really, really impressed - and quite surprised - at the level of detail in the dialogue cinematics. The characters are expressive, the shaders are top notch, and the lighting has a great defining quality. Love having a beefy graphics card again.

Ctrl Paint Is a great website I like to go to weekly to see what tidbits the author has put up. He covers a great many aspects of digital and traditional drawing, and more importantly focuses on the theory of illustration (composition, colour theory, perspective etc.) rather than specific technical direction. If I want to know what brush settings did I’d google it, what I really want to know is why artists make the choices and design decisions they do.

Colour Theory

Unfortunately I don’t think I can embed this. The presentation isn’t as cut-and-clean as some infographic-type visual guides, but personally I like it. Keeps the look organic. The content is what’s most important, and I periodically go back and re-read sections of this as a go-to of the basics whenever I’m struggling to figure out a particular colour.

Belciere. the “Big Bad” in my graphic adventure.

I’m far too tired and annoyed with this picture to try doing anything more with it, there’s at least a dozen things I can fiddle with and work on, but if I started on it I’d never stop. On the bright side though, I’m finally starting to get the hang of colour theory. Long way to go yet, but this piece expanded my understanding somewhat. Mostly in having the background the same tempurature and saturation as the foreground’s shadow, to create depth. Also having a warm light and cool shadows. I’ve been studying a tutorial about colour theory, that I’ll post above.

EDIT: Oh wait, he doesn’t have eyebrows.. I always forget the eyebrows!

Finished the image of Alzeth.
I’ll be honest, I don’t like this one at all. The colours of his outfit are weak, that is to day, desaturated and pale, they’ll take on far too much of any environment’s ambient light. There are a lot of details on him I want to give exposure to, and they aren’t visible here. I’ll rework this image when I next get the chance, should be after christmas after I get the dissertation out of the way. Stay tuned for then!

Tigris, the loveable tiger warrior guy.

Figuratively a child inhabiting an adult’s body. Like a kid however he’s prone to throwing tantrums, and his rash actions can sometimes cause trouble for those around him. Figured that instead of static standing poses, having images a little more expressive like this can tell you a lot more about the character. Maybe I shouldn’t explain this image much more, gives me a chance to see how well I’ve done with it.

Finalising the design of one of my characters. Uma Dawson. See: Uma D. Gettid? *snicker*
A spy/thief/hacker person, fairly sardonic, droll and tomboyish, but I still wanted her a little effeminate. Major influences being characters like Prince Kheldar from the Belgariad and Elle Ragu from the Shadow Skill anime. Halfway through the look of Malcom Reynolds (right) hit me like a bell, haha it must’ve been subliminal, was watching the show only last week. Moar to come, but this illustration took a lot longer than I anticipated. (When do they not? :D)
